Ashwin Amavasya Vrat and Puja Vidhi
Ashwin Amavasya 2024 is a significant day for Pitru Pujan since it marks the completion of all Shradh Paksha rites. On this auspicious occasion, the following rites are carried out:
- Take a morning bath in a sacred river, lake, or pond. Make an offering to your ancestors and an argh to the Sun God.
- Light a lamp (Deepak) and set it on the main door in the evening, along with some sweets like Poori. This is necessary to prevent your ancestors from traveling hungry, as the lamp will guide them to Pitru Loka.
- On Ashwin Amavasya, you can do the Shradh of your forebears if you are unsure of the day or date.
- Additionally, on this auspicious day, you can make an oblation (Pitru Tarpan) to your ancestors if you haven’t been able to do so throughout the full Shradh Paksha.
- On this day, one should also feed the poor or Brahmin to ensure their ancestors have a peaceful afterlife.
The Significance of Ashwina Amavasya
Ashwina Amavasya, also known as Pitru Amavasya, is a day dedicated to honoring one’s ancestors. In Hindu tradition, it is believed that the souls of deceased ancestors visit the earth during this time, and offering prayers and rituals can help liberate them from the cycle of rebirth. This new moon day is also considered a powerful time for spiritual practices, as the energy of the new moon is believed to be conducive to deep meditation, self-reflection, and connecting with the divine.
Ashwina Amavasya typically falls during the Pitru Paksha period, a 15-day phase dedicated to the ancestors. This adds to its significance, as the rituals performed on this day are believed to bring peace to the souls of the departed and blessings to the living.
Importance of Ashwin Amavasya
Because Ashwin Amavasya 2024 is so important for maintaining ancestral harmony, it is also referred to as Sarva Pitru Amavasya or Mahalaya Amavasya. When considering Tantra, this Amavasya is equally as significant as Shradh Karma. Shardiya Navratri starts on Ashwin Amavasya, the following day. On this Amavasya night, worshippers of Maa Durga and her nine forms, together with those engaged in Tantra Sadhna, undertake a variety of Tantric rites.
