Story Behind Raksha Bandhan

Hindus celebrate Raksha Bandhan 2024, also known as Rakhi or Rakri, as a joyful day to acknowledge the relationship of love and duty that exists between brothers and sisters. But because it unites people of all genders, religions, and cultural origins to honor platonic love, this festival has meaning beyond biological bonds.

In Sanskrit, the phrase “Raksha Bandhan” means “the knot of protection.” The customs surrounding this celebration may differ depending on the location, but they all entail tying a thread. A colorful and sometimes intricate thread is tied around her brother’s wrist by a sister or a figure resembling a sister, signifying her prayers and well wishes for his safety. The brother gives his sister a heartfelt gift in exchange.

Raksha Bandhan’s origins date back thousands of years. Legends surrounding Alexander the Great that date back to 326 BCE mention this feast. Hindu texts also tell of Raksha Bandhan 2024 in many ways.

  • In one such tale, Indra’s wife Sachi is said to have wrapped a thread around her husband’s wrist to protect him in a fight with the powerful demon King Bali. According to one story, holy threads may have been worn as amulets in ancient India, protecting warrior men and not just between brothers and sisters.
  • A further story from the Bhagavat Puran and Vishnu Puran describes how King Bali asks Vishnu to reside in his palace following Vishnu’s victory against him and his conquest of the three worlds. Goddess Lakshmi, the spouse of Vishnu, is not fond of this arrangement and becomes her brother by tying a Rakhi on King Bali. King Bali grants Lakshmi a desire after being moved by this act, and she requests that Vishnu go back to her home.
  • In an alternate tale, Devi Manasa, Ganesh’s sister, pays him a visit to Raksha Bandhan and places a Rakhi on his wrist. Shubh and Labh, Ganesh’s sons, are motivated by this. They want to celebrate Raksha Bandhan but feel excluded because they don’t have a sister. Santoshi Maa is created when they convince Ganesh to give them a sister. The three siblings have been celebrating Raksha Bandhan 2024 together every year since then.
  • Renowned for their deep relationship, Krishna and Draupadi share a momentous occasion on Raksha Bandhan. Draupadi cuts a piece of her sari to bandage Krishna’s finger wound during combat. Inspired by her loving gesture, Krishna vows to return the favor. Subsequently, Krishna keeps his word by helping Draupadi at a crucial time.
  • Furthermore, before Krishna departs to fight in the great war, Draupadi ties Rakhi to him in the epic Mahabharat. Similar to this, before Abhimanyu goes forth on his fight, Kunti, the mother of the Pandavas, ties him a Rakhi.

These tales demonstrate the profound links of love and protection that exist outside of biological relationships, highlighting the rich cultural significance and varied storylines related to Raksha Bandhan 2024.
